According to the Arthritis Foundation, more than 50 million Americans have arthritis, making it the No. 1 cause of disability in the country.

MOSCOW – As part of Arthritis Awareness Month, Gritman Medical Center is highlighting its many services and classes for those dealing with arthritis.

Every month, Gritman offers free Total Knee and Total Hip Replacement classes designed for people considering or planning a total joint replacement.

Attendees have access to Gritman’s experts who will offer tips and advice to ensure the best possible recovery. The classes touch on pre- and post-surgery exercises and instruction; nutritional counseling; home preparation; and a daily breakdown of what to expect while at the hospital.

Total Knee classes are offered 1-2:30 p.m. on the first Monday of every month, while Total Hip classes are held 1-2:30 p.m on the fourth Monday of every month. All classes are taught at Gritman’s Inpatient Physical Therapy Gym. For more information or to register, call Therapy Solutions at (208) 883-1522.

Gritman also offers its arthritis class at the Martin Wellness Center’s pool. The class is designed to help those with arthritis and joint pain by incorporating gentle range of motion stretching and exercises to help maintain and/or regain strength and range of motion in affected joints. Classes are offered 8-9 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Pool classes are limited to 10 people, and early registration is encouraged. Drop-ins are welcome if space is available. The class is $4.68 per session, however, monthly passes are available.
