Welcome Stephen Barbuto, DPT

Featured3 Stephen BarbutoWe’re pleased to welcome Stephen Barbuto, DPT, to our Gritman Therapy Solutions team! Stephen holds a doctorate in physical therapy and is a Certified Athletic Trainer. We’re excited to have Stephen join our talented team of therapists and took a few minutes to get to know Moscow’s newest DPT.

What do you love about being a DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy)?

Working with all types of people and getting them back to doing what they love the most. Helping people help themselves is how I treat. I try to meet patients where they are and give them as much information about their condition as I can. Together, we design a plan that makes sense to both of us, and have them basically work me out of a job.

Are you from the area?

I just moved back to Moscow from the Seattle area where I’d been practicing in medicine for the last 21 years. I lived in Genesee and Moscow back in the late 70s while my parents worked at the University of Idaho. I’m also a Washington State University alumnus from their Kinesiology program, majoring in athletic training (1995).

What first interested you in going into medicine?

I broke my foot playing basketball in high school and received PT after it healed. I realized it was something I would enjoy doing and later on realized I had a knack for it. When I graduated with my doctorate I sent my first PT a graduation announcement letting him know the influence he had on me. I later found out he was retiring later that month.

What aspect of patient care are you most passionate about?

I love orthopedics, manual therapy, post-surgical care, sports rehab (throwing, running, jumping, etc.), and injury prevention, especially ACL tears. Nothing is more exciting than seeing someone’s progress when their hard work starts paying off.

Why did you choose Gritman?

I asked all my friends who live on the Palouse where I should look for work when we were considering moving and they all said Gritman. There was a PT position available and I was fortunate to receive an interview and get the job.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Spending time with my family (spouse, three dogs and a cat), CrossFit, Olympic weightlifting, car shows, cinema, books, music… and coffee… definitely coffee!
